“May the wind of August lift you up, elevate you and blow you in the right direction.”
― De philosopher DJ Kyos
August is a time of transition. It’s when the sizzling hot, mosquito infested days slowly release their grip and the door to autumn begins to open ever so slightly. The weathermen say things like, “First time in 17 days that it will not get above 90.” or “Are you ready for the evening cool downs headed our way?” By “cool down” they mean low 80s instead of upper. But on those nights when the wind is also blowing and the bugs are not trying to carry you away, you thank the weather Gods for offering a tiny respite from the drenching heat that kept you indoors more than you’d like to admit.
These days are not consistent, though. They are sprinkled throughout the calendar, randomly appearing like the lightening bugs we run to catch. By the end of the month, the idea of coming together in the evening around a bonfire resurfaces. Not to keep us warm, but to beckon autumn—hurry it along. Or is it a surrender? If you can’t beat the heat, join it? Either way, the body knows change is coming and we shift.
Are you noticing a shift coming? Are you being called to transition from a life you thought you would be living to one that feels unfamiliar to you?
If part of this shift involved you moving your kids from public school to homeschool or to unschooling this year, I welcome you to the fold! The number of families choosing this path is growing significantly.
I imagine your reasons for making this decision are to provide a more optimal environment for your children to thrive. Maybe you’ve seen things happening in school that are causing you to question the judgment of teachers and staff. Maybe you realize there’s a great deal of wasted time in school and you think your kids could learn more and faster at home. Maybe your kids were ok in school, but a family situation has changed and bringing your kids home, even for just for a little while, is warranted. Regardless of your reason, having people to talk to and a place to go when you have questions, feel stuck, or simply need to know you are not alone is invaluable.
I invite you to join me throughout the month of August to gather, to play, and to grow. You are welcome to join as many gatherings as you would like. Several are focused on a particular topic (see below) whereas The Barefoot Playground is a monthly community for curious parents to gather. Here we will play with topics and ideas around homeschooling and parenting with the goal of putting research and theories about child development and well-being into daily practice.
I look forward to meeting you where you are and supporting you on this exciting and freeing journey!
