What does unschooling look like as children mature?
How do you square letting the child lead with state standards?
Will they fall behind?
Is it necessary to give our homeschooling style a name?
What if I don’t have a license to teach or never took an education class?
I want to homeschool, but my spouse is not on board. What can I do?
Is it too late to start unschooling now that my child is in middle school?
I have fielded so many questions like these over the past 14 years. Some I even mulled over myself when the idea of homeschooling entered our lives. Before having kids I had no plans of skipping traditional school. Actually, even after my first child was born I still believed he would eventually enroll in school when the time came. It’s what everyone did, right? Going to public school was a gift to be grateful for not something to scoff at, right? I was trained to teach in school so why would I opt out with my own child?
Time and circumstances revealed things to me that I had not considered before. The desire to skip Kindergarten grew and because I also had a five month old baby, it seemed like a logical choice to keep our family unit together for a little bit longer. (You can hear more of my homeschooling why here.) As some of you already know, that decision turned into a K-12 homeschooling adventure and my son graduated our homeschool in 2021.
We have learned a lot over the years and my interest in and support of homeschooling has simply grown stronger. Specifically, the philosophy of unschooling and how it folds so beautifully into parenting respectfully and with intention. I’m excited to be offering Zoom Gatherings* in August to walk through the ins and outs of homeschooling, to share what unschooling looks like through the ages, and to discuss the mistakes, mishaps, and triumphs along the way.
No matter where YOU are on your learning journey or your kids, there will be a gathering to support you.
Think of it like a virtual dining room table type chat. There won’t be charts, diagrams, or PowerPoint presentations just parents learning together and trying to figure out how to best support their growing children in a time of massive societal transition.
Invite a friend or send an invite to the curious yet confused grandparent who wonders why in the world you would choose to homeschool! I know they are out there and I understand their fears. These types of conversations can do wonders to calm the worry and elevate joy.
*If you are a paid subscriber, you get first dibs. Let me know which gathering you would like and I’ll add you!
